Hip pain and loss of mobility can be caused by several conditions or diseases. These include osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, post-traumatic arthritis, avascular necrosis and paget’s disease. Hip replacement surgery is one of the most important surgical advances of this century. It is the second most common joint replacement procedure.

Advances in Total Hip Replacement

Over the past 30 years, there have been significant technological and physiological advancements in the designs of total hip replacements. Yet, in only the past few years have there been advances in the surgical approach of the hip. At Florida Orthopaedic Specialists we offer the latest technological treatments for total hip replacement, the Muscle Sparring method.

This procedure requires NO muscle or tendon detachment, and the incision length is approximately 3-4 ½ inches instead of the usual 12-15 inches with a traditional hip replacement surgery. The result is a majority of patients require a shorter hospital stay, have minimal pain and are able to walk with a cane in 24 hours. Most are driving within 2 weeks and have limited postoperative physically therapy requirements. View a presentation of the procedure in the "Less Is More" presentation box to the right of this page.

Treatments for hip pain and loss of mobility include surgical and non-surgical remedies:

Non-surgical

  • Non-steroidal and/or steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs
  • Joint fluid supplements
  • Cortisone Injections
  • Physical Therapy

Surgical

  • Hip Arthroscopy
  • Total Hip Replacement
  • Hip Fracture Repair

The muscle sparing procedure is the latest technique in hip replacement surgery. Dr. Mark Powers is one of the innovators of this procedure and has performed hundreds of these surgeries. The video to the right is a documentary of the muscle sparing procedure.
