About David Vecchione, MD, FAAOS
Dr. David Vecchione is a board-certified fellowship-trained orthopaedic and spinal surgeon focusing his practice on conditions of the cervical, thoracic, and lumbosacral spine, as well as arthritic conditions of the hip and knee. Dr. Vecchione strives to deliver state-of-the-art healthcare commensurate with a large academic institution, but in a personalized private-practice setting.
Dr. Vecchione attended New York University College of Arts and Science as an undergraduate, completing bachelor studies in biology, chemistry, and economics. During this time he was named to the Varsity Student-Athlete Honor List (Golf), elected into the Phi Beta Kappa Society, and graduated Magna Cum Laude. He continued enrollment at New York University, earning his medical degree from the School of Medicine.
Following medical school, he completed internship and residency programs in orthopaedic surgery at Jackson Memorial Hospital / University of Miami Health System, consistently ranked among the nation’s largest academic centers providing resident physicians high-volume surgical training. This training environment afforded Dr. Vecchione the opportunity to provide orthopaedic care in Level-I trauma center and tertiary referral center settings to the citizens of Miami-Dade county, broader South Florida, and international patients searching for specialized academic evidence-based medicine. Dr. Vecchione served as a chief resident throughout his final year of residency and provided orthopaedic coverage for several sports teams, including the University of Miami Division I NCAA football team and the Miami Marlins of Major League Baseball.
Throughout medical school and residency Dr. Vecchione developed an interest in neuroscience and spinal surgery, fostered by experiences with spinal surgeons within the orthopaedic program and time spent with colleagues in the neurosurgery department. He elected to pursue focused subspecialty training in spinal surgery, completing a fellowship in orthopaedic spine surgery at William Beaumont Health System in Royal Oak, Michigan; one of only 17 ACGME-accredited orthopaedic spine surgery fellowships in the country. Beaumont Health (Royal Oak) is a Level-I trauma center and tertiary referral center with both community clinic and private practice environments affording training from several of the country’s expert spine surgeons utilizing modern techniques from complex open surgery to minimally invasive techniques focused on providing exceptional spine care.
Academic and basic science research have played an integral role throughout Dr. Vecchione’s medical education and training, exemplified by projects completed during formal training and by two years of dedicated basic science research, including one year at the Weil Cornell Medical College Gene Therapy Core Facility and a second year in the New York University Department of Neurosurgery. A broad range of topics has been investigated, including manufacturing adeno/adeno-associated viral constructs for gene therapy, analysis of tissue and fluid biomarker analysis in murine and porcine stroke models using mass spectrometry and histology, protein biomarker analysis in colon cancer, articular cartilage injuries in the hip and knee, cortical and pedicle screw fixation in spinal fusion constructs, hypotensive anesthesia in operative scoliosis patients, and infection risk in spinal deformity surgery. While a number of these projects are not directly related to his current practice, the principals of basic science and evidence-based medicine established during these investigations has provided a foundation for clinical decision making and critical evaluation as medical technology continues to advance and treatment options expand. He remains actively involved in education and research in the field of orthopedics and spinal surgery.
At Florida Orthopaedic Specialists, Dr. Vecchione works closely with non-operative orthopaedic physicians, physical therapists, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, medical assistants, and pain management specialists to provide a multidisciplinary team approach to orthopaedic and spinal care, with an emphasis on a sequential progression through pathways, trialing non-operative modalities initially, reserving surgical intervention as the final option.
When surgery is indicated by the physician and selected by the patient, Dr. Vecchione will proceed with the least invasive option to limit hospital stay, recovery period, postoperative discomfort, and time before return to a regular active lifestyle. Dr. Vecchione is trained and certified in the surgical procedures treating the aforementioned disorders, including spinal decompression, spinal fusion, spinal disc replacement, muscle-sparing anterior total hip replacement, and muscle-sparing total knee replacement.
Dr. Vecchione is dedicated to restoring function and promoting patients’ return to an active, healthy lifestyle, a process initiated during the first office visit by getting to know the individual patient and understanding their unique expectations, needs, and goals. During office visits priority is placed on patient education, from imaging review to the rationale behind the evidence-based treatment options. Fostering education and active patient participation in decision-making helps to ensure an appropriate and agreeable treatment plan is tailored for each individual patient, whether it be surgical or non-surgical, traditional or minimally invasive, ultimately leading to better outcomes and happier patients who can enjoy an improved quality of life.
